Developing Artists FAQ

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 5, 2012, 5:41 PM

Hey everyone, just wanted to make a new journal about some stuff that's goin on in my head, and to those who care feel free to read.

So I've just graduated with a BA in the Arts (WOW SOOOOO HARDCORE) in late April. Aside from handling small freelance and commission stuff between my spare time, I also started working full time at a local mobile game studio as a concept artist and animator.

Now thinking back on my journey so far, I've met a lot of obstacles and obviously overcame many of them,  and the ones I didn't overcome I keep on trying. For the longest time, while being in this online art community filled with countless talents of various degrees, I have sought knowledge amongst the community here, and in turn people have also came asking for knowledge in return. While I specialize in the entertainment industry as a visual production and sometimes pre-production artist, there have been many learning curves that I had to tackle by myself, because lets face it, if school was the end all point for knowledge seekers then EVERYONE who comes out should be industry rock stars.

But my main concern I want to put out there in this journal is that people on this art community often ask the wrong questions when it comes to finding out how to be a better artist. Now I don't wish to personally describe any examples, but there are already memes made by other people who share my concern.

First and foremost. A pen does not make the poet, just as a brush does not make the painter. I had a crappy $50 Grapphire tablet for over 4 years when I first started digital painting, and then I bought my Intuos4.

Learning more things never hurt. In fact, being a one-trick horse is what kills you. If you are aiming for the gaming or animation field, and you are amazing at drawing  only in 2D Japanese anime style... If you're a pokemon trainer and you only have 1 uber amazing plant type monster that's lv 55, and the rest are a bunch of lv 6 Pidgeys. Then you go to the Elites at the end of the game, you're FUCKED!!!

This one is thee most asked question I get. The truth is my custom brushes are all made from the standard brushes that come with Photoshop. Again, it's not the brush that makes the artist. Never mind how I do that chromatic shift thing in Photoshop. Actually I will tell you how to do it.  Flatten the image and just go offset some channels, but it certainly won't make you a better artist. (well it might if you already know what you're doing instead of fucking around in MS Paint and telling yourself that you're the next Craig Mullins)

Now I know what you're thinking, oh this guy is such a hypocrit bla bla bla what an ego prick. Firstly  I do not want to give off the impression that I am here to give AMAZING advice. I'm not, I am still very early in this adventure and I'm certainly in no position to say that I am a great artist.

What I can say in truth on how to be a competent craftsman is TO PRACTICE RIGHT, PRACTICE A LOT, AND NEVER EVER STOP LEARNING!!! There are no shortcuts in life, as there are no diamonds without the initial pressure. Sure some people may get lucky and get early recognition and then get their life put on the fast track, but not everyone can be an instant rockstars. Do what you love for the sake of your passion, and money will follow, and never set your eyes only on money.

Keep drawing, enjoy life, and laugh till it hurts :)

Diablo 3 HACKED LOL

Journal Entry: Thu May 31, 2012, 9:26 AM

Yay so this morning I noticed I got hacked LOL My lv60 barbie was all nakid!!! Thank god they couldn't take those delicious black mushrooms or my bottled rainbow :D

It's weird because I never had any issues with these types of online games when it comes to account compromising, I mean I have a Starcraft 2 account but what are they gonna do, STEAL MY RANKS and ACHIEVEMENTS???

Buddies of mine were hacked earlier this week, and I started to notice a trend, but I thought: NAH I'd never get hacked, I don't even play stuff like WOW (cuz my friends all do and have experienced some bad times there wth hacking) until this morning when I logged in to Bnet, surprise!!! heh heh

At any rate, I'm now told by my friend to firstly stop playing public games on there, submit a ticket for character rollback, and to get an authenticator asap. So hopefully this will help anyone out there who haven't been hacked yet, so get protected and don't end up with an unwanted baby hack! :D

Diablo 3

Journal Entry: Thu May 17, 2012, 3:24 PM

So I beat the game the other day and now playing Nightmare mode. Incredible environments, great game play, lots of stuff to do, and nightmare already kicks my ass.

Speculation for aftermath of D3.    Spoilers

Black Soulstone gets picked up by some stupid human, goes to mount Arrat Crater and starts performing more death metal rituals for fun. Decard Cain comes back as a ghost and keeps playing antique road show with you. Tyrael still tries to help but his asshole friends in the angel book club don't want to pitch in, leaving you to do everything again.

I'm sure a lot of you have seen the 'leaked' Crysis 3 ad on Origin.... So upon seeing the cover image, this was my reaction...

Now that I think about it, with Crysis 2 aside from it's amazing visuals (if your computer could handle it smoothly without turning into a bomb) was a completely disappointment. It was extremely repetitive from the 2nd level straight through the end of the game, and the ending felt so cheap and cliche like it was created for the audience of a bunch of 12 year-olds.  But then again why would someone even play a game simply for it's graphics? It's as if watching porno purely at the expectation of a great plot. OH WAIT THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DID BY PLAYING THIS GAME :D :D :D

So what do you guys think?

Commissions?

Journal Entry: Sun Apr 8, 2012, 7:20 PM

So apparently quite a handful of people have been noting me about commissions, and I feel bad not having any journals up about it.

So.... I guess this is a journal for those who wants a commission from me?

Please note me on the details!

Please be sure to include basic descriptions of what you would like in your commission:

a) What kind of or how many characters/creatures you're hoping to get.

b) Color/BW/line art

c) Please refrain from simply asking 'how much for a commission?' without mentioning the above descriptions, as I will reply with 'how much for a string at a fabric store?'

My commissions are strictly limited to personal/non-profit uses, not to be used commercially

Thanks!

Considering Earth Hour

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 31, 2012, 10:03 AM

Before you decide to turn off every electronic device/ appliance in your household, consider the following.

Your local power plants constantly generates power, which are distributed through your neighborhood's transformers, and eventually end up in your home at a fraction. These power plants operates on a 24\7 schedule, and the amount of energy they create are not stored in an abundant level, except in the case of fail-safe protocols does a power plant provide minor backup electricity.

SO, by turning off all the electricity in your home, while saving bills on an economic level, does not dictate the fact that you are actually preserving energy. You are just simply not using the constant flow of electricity coming from your local provider.

Secondly, should you participate in total shutdown during Earth Hour, please consider that turning the power back on approximately after the end of the hour, may apply an incredible amount of stress on your local transformer. Reason being that there is a high chance that many people would be turning their power back on simultaneously right after Earth Hour, this causes a sudden, flooding of electrical current in the form of electric surge which can overflow the transformer. That's how your neighborhood may end up with a blown transformer, which by the way, does take days for the city to send a replacement, and at the main time, you'll have a blackout for the next couple of days.

Though the ideology that Earth Hour encompasses the awareness of utilizing and rationing electricity for the good of our environment, it would almost be counter productive and pointless to simply turn off the lights for an hour once every 365 days.

Instead, try turning off the lights after leaving a room. Install energy efficient lights/dimmer lights in your household. Open a window for a breeze, use fans instead of air conditioners from time to time during the summer.

And it doesn't have to stop there with just electricity, I'm sure there are tons of ways out there that are both environmentally friendly as well as economically efficient when it comes to energy consumption.

Don't take showers that are more than  half  hours long. Ride a bicycle, take public transits more often, carpool, put a mop on your baby and make them crawl to clean the floor.

Most importantly: Buy less non-recyclable and crap quality products that will only last you a couple of days/months, only to end up in a landfill for the rest of its days later on.

I hope this entry is a bit helpful in creating a more environmentally friendly community!

First Galactic Problems -Spoilers-

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 21, 2012, 3:02 PM

This might be old knews, but I beat ME3 2 weeks ago, so now I'm finally posting my 2 cents about the ending and my overall experience of the trilogy.

THE ENDING IS SO BUDGET!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, slightly changing the colours to the cinematics is not a legit way to call them  nor epic endings. Plus my choices did squat at the end. Essentially, upon spending hours completing side quests, even the main quests, was totally neglected at the very end. So bro heard you like to make tough decisions throughout the game! Well here are 3 final choices, which none of them require a prerequisite from the choices you made throughout the entire trilogy!!!

Plus the whole time during the game, I did not once feel that there was a sense of urgency. I mean come on, Earth is getting fucked sideways by the robo squids, and I'm running random errands to get a few space credits? Bitch please they totally shoulda went with that Fallout I 100-days shit, after that, YOUR GALAXY ASLPODE!!!

I read up on the internet that Bioware is paying attention to the people's complaints regarding to their shotty ending, and quite frankly, I'm glad that they're in the process of making a true ending to replace this poor excuse of a conclusion, and it  better be free.... cuz that Prothean DLC that we had to pay to get on the first day was the most retarded idea ever, period.

Anywho, Diablo III soontime..... soontime.....

John Carter Review

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 12, 2012, 4:58 PM

Please write one without giving a spoiler if you've seen it. I would like to hear the people's voice instead of ones from popular critics.

Plus I don't trust official review sites such as RottenTomatoes, after hearing some say: It's too much like Avatar/ StarWars....

Mass Effect 3 -NO SPOILERS PLEASE-

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 10, 2012, 10:32 AM

Hey everyone! Just letting you all know that this game is fantastic so far! I've only played roughly 8 hours into it, doing as many side quests as I can. I've also played the first and the 2nd one fully in order to get the best experience for the third one (which I highly recommend).

Please do not post any spoiler related comments, or even hints of spoilers. Please be respectful for other people who have yet to complete this game.

Anywho, if anyone has ME3 on PC, feel free to add me up on Origin by sending me a note!
